Flaneurs_lobster - I presume your problem over xmas and new year was due to your chained SO`s for reward accounts. My SO`s for RS`s over new year were not a problem, they just go out on the first working day of the month. I do not use SO`s in a chain. I stagger one £500 SO each day from about the 5th day in the month from my "hub" to my reward current accounts eg Halifax Lloyds. I keep a small amount in my "hub" account except at the beginning of the month when I move a large amount in to service the multiple RS`s. Less admin than doing manual payments.
