Energy discounts

I understand that most electricity users will get a £400 discount paid over a 6 month period. I also believe that those who use alternative fuels will get a £200 credit.
Are there any circumstances where someone would get both of this payments?
Thanks for any feedback

Yes if you live in an area (postcode) predominantly supplied by alternative fuels so not mains gas you could also get the £200 Alternate Fuels Payment.

So for a lot of rural areas where people have moved or have a new house with ASHP or have economy 7 but are in an area predominantly supplied by alternated fuels as mains gas is not available they will get both payments.

Yes, 99% of those receiving AFP will get both.  That includes me.    Our £200 was issued two days ago (we are on oil) and the electric qualified us for the £66/67pm payments.

Thanks for posting this topic. I’ve just received £200 from ShellEnergy, shown as a ‘FasterPayment- Refund’ in my banking app. I suspected it might be that additional payment, but I wasn’t expecting to get that. I also get the £66/£67 credits, but no mains gas supply available in my village.

Unless you are off-grid for electricity, or on a sub-meter then, if you receive the AFP, you should already have got the first 5 payments under the EBSS.

And those who don't get it automatically but themselves use alternative fuels for their main heating, should apply for it next month.
  • Thanks to all for your replies.
When I read the explanation on the government website, I didn’t find it clear at all. It seemed to imply that you both had to be off the gas grid AND using an alternative fuel for heating, such as oil.
I won’t send it back then.

It is actually possible to get £750 free.

I get the £400, AFP of £200 and the Warm Home Discount £150.

The Warm Home Discount is an annual scheme though, not prompted by the rise in energy prices.

If you want to go down that line there's also the Winter Fuel Payment and any Cold Weather Payments …

The £400 and £200 energy crisis payments are not at all dependent upon age or benefit eligibility, just simply based on being an individual household within England, Scotland or Wales that uses energy (although certain households are explicitly excluded, such as student accommodation https://www.gov.uk/apply-energy-bill-support-if-not-automatic ).
