Thank you. The only edit to the opening post was to change € to £DullGreyGuy said:Original post obviously edited and so difficult to follow the whole story.
At the end of the day if they are concerned about the validity of a police letter then take it to a police station with the requested documents as if its genuine they will register them and if its false they will deal with the fraud
She has to sent photos of car..bin no and log book along with copy of original letter to the cloning dept.
I feel it's a scam but hopefully will know soon.
Thank you for your reply1 -
What exactly does the letter say about "checking the details for £140"? Is it sending her to a website?0

Yeah, of course they will.1 -
The cloning department has been back in touch and cannot find any evidence of this.
She's just sent them a photo of the original letter...so hopefully more updates soon.
Thanks all0 -
Let me tell you what will happenluvchocolate said:I'll try to explain as best as I can.
A friend called me saying she had received a letter today from Greater Manchester police saying she had been involved in an accident and left without notification.
Apparently at the beginning of the year in a supermarket car park
She doesn't remember being there and bank statements show no purchases.
She was asked to return form giving her e mail...date of birth and driving licence no. Or get a fine for £1,000
Told she couldn't phone to discuss but could check details online for £140.
I know what I think but has anyone else heard of this
You will pay £140.00 and if you are lucky you will lose that to the scammer and if you are unlucky your bank account will be rinsed0 -
Update...surprised to tell you the police have seen letter and confirmed it's genuine.
They are now investigating1 -

Letter came from the police.
They are investigating as my friend is sure she wasn't at this supermarket at the date they are quoting...my friend is not a shopper and would have purchased on credit/debit card.
No cctv0 -

Still sounds very dodgy... The £140 to check details makes no sense at all.Update...surprised to tell you the police have seen letter and confirmed it's genuine.

If the alleged accident took place on private land (a supermarket car park) would the police be bothered? Maybe only if there was an injury.
Like Aretnap says - a formal notice from the police would ask to identify the driver at the time and that is the first step; the correct response is to say that the vehicle was elsewhere at the time and/or not being driven. Preferably with evidence. If there is no CCTV to show the suspect vehicle then what are they relying on? An eye-witness who got the number wrong?
Does GMP even have a "cloning dept"? The Met doesn't (and I know this because I have been cloned). The photos etc. would be to prove that your vehicle is not the one that has been reported for the incident by showing differences. And you then confirm this to DVLA.
Have you seen the letter? Or are you relaying info that your friend tells you? They may be confused/mistaken.
I need to think of something new here...1 -
so @luvchocolate - what did the letter actually say ? Having made a strong accusation of 'scam' you're now avoiding/deflecting the topic
IIRC on receiving an S172 you don't automatically get the right to the additional evidence now - you either accept the fixed penalty or you can recieve the additional evidence if you opt for court (obviously with a higher risk/penalty)
Has your 'friend' misunderstood ??
