Why is there such a vast difference in average energy costs?

€650 - France
€650 - Belgium
€620 - Spain
€558 - Germany
€558 - Denmark
€546 - Holland
€545 - Austria
€543 - Norway
€476 - Finland
€174 - Poland
€2,960 - UK

If you want to pay prices based on 30 minute or daily wholesale prices, then choose a tariff like Octopus Agile or Tracker: the latter now has a 6 month estimated waiting list. The risk with market-following tariffs is that prices can be extremely volatile if market conditions suddenly change. These tariffs require a smart meter and some consumer engagement.

Clearly, if wholesale prices continue to fall then, as predicted by some, we can expect to see a reduction in the Ofgem Cap.

What consumers actually pay for their energy depends not only on wholesale prices but also Government policy. For example, how environmental and SoLR costs are recovered, and the level of any help that a Government is minded to give its citizens.

My daughter has a one bedroom place just outside Oslo and certainly pays more than that despite Norway generating all its own electricity (and exporting gas)! High salaries and high tax make direct comparisons difficult. Petrol was about £2.60 a litre when I was there last May.

Previously she lived in the Netherlands where salaries / taxes are similar to here and paid much more than the figure quoted on Twitter which is hardly a reliable source.

Doesn't take much research to find alternative sources:
