BA vouchers

Options
I have some BA vouchers that are from the covid lockdown period but they have an expiration date of sept 2023 and I don't think I'm going to travel prior to that date.

I want to either exchange them for cash *or* book tickets in my daughters name, and she can give me the money---but I just read a thread where the poster was saying that there's a 2 year delay from BA changing the vouchers to cash---which is terrible tbh. So does anyone know if BA allow flights in-other-peoples-names to be booked with their vouchers. Or does anyone have any updated information about how to get a quick transaction, changing the vouchers to cash.

thanks for your help, it's quite a lot of money and I want to know how other people have got on trying to get their cash out or book in another persons name

Do you have a Future Travel Voucher or an eVoucher?
There is info on spending eVouchers here https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/incident/coronavirus/vouchers-refunds
    from the FAQs

Does the booking have to be made in your name?

No, eVoucher holders don’t need to travel on a booking made using their eVoucher. Although for security reasons, bookings made within four days of departure must include all eVoucher holders.

Does the expiry date mean that you have to travel by September 23 or book by then to travel sometime beyond then and into 2024.  If the latter then maybe you could make use of them yourself?

As ever, the devil is in the detail, so this doesn't necessarily mean it's open season for anyone with a BA voucher to claim cash instead - that claimant appears to have been making the specific case that her chosen destination (Japan) was still inaccessible in late 2020:

Her frustration began, she explained, when her preferred destination of Japan did not reopen its borders to visitors as quickly as other nations. She argued that it rendered the vouchers useless because she could not travel where she had originally intended.

By December 2020, with Japan's borders still closed, she raised the issue with BA and requested a cash refund, but her request was denied.

so someone still holding similar vouchers several years later is unlikely to be able to use exactly the same argument, although the principle of contract frustration ought to be the same....
  • I guess it depends where the bar is for respecting someone's preference. She wanted to travel to Japan, nowhere else that BA went. What if Japan had reopened but she was unable to afford the increased ticket prices? Meanwhile BA earn interest on the money she paid them.

Many questions are left unanswered, but it's a useful stick to beat BA over the head with if you want a refund.
