Do benefits count as income on mortgage application?

Hi there I have posted elsewhere but no replies as yet so I will repost here, TIA.

I am looking for information on what income can be taken into account with a mortgage application.

My husband works full time and earns a basic weekly wage plus an annual bonus.

I am a stay at home mum/carer of two children, one child receives Child Disability Payment (Scottish equivelent to DLA) and I also get carers allowance and child benefit on top of this - is this income taken into account? The disability benefit/carers allowance is not on an indefinite basis, we have to reapply every two years for this (current award expires February 2024).

Thanks.

I know that NatWest allow all the benefits you mention to be included as income, but it is open to each lender to decide how to treat them. There will usually be guidance on what can be included on the application form or online. In some respects, even a benefit that is reviewed every two years is more certain than the salary from a job!
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

What is counted may differ between different lenders.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

I’ve recently got a mortgage with NatWest and they didn’t accept my sons DLA as income. They did accept my CA although it only increased our borrowing by £100.
I would suggest going through a broker as all lenders have different criteria.

I'd be surprised if DLA paid in respect of children would be counted as income of the parents for the likes of mortgage applications. CA and CHB should be counted as income though.
  • Great, thanks for the replies, we have some adverse credit issues that don't drop off my husband's credit report until January 2025 as well so that obviously further complicates matters as well.
