RAC Essential

My RAC Breakdown cover ends at the end of the month, so I went to their website to renew my cover. 
For their complete service they wanted £176 plus an extra £44 for onward travel. And as I've got one of those cars with no spare wheel  I thought I'd add tyre replace £72. A total of £292
I then went on to a comparison site. There was plenty of companies from £15.95. There was also RAC essential £30 which includes onward travel, but you have to pay £40 excess. I could also add  tyre replacement for only £36. Half the price. So the total is only £66.
I wondered how there was such a differences so I phoned up the RAC and asked what was the differences. The person I spoke to didn't now if there was any but kept saying "You have to pay excess of £40" Yes I'd have pay excess but I could call them 5 times and it would still be cheaper.

Has anyone had the RAC Essential?

What brand of tyre would they fit? Is this actually done on the roadside?

Apart from the tyre replacement I can get everything else for less than £50 and no excess via Startrescue depending on age of car. 

I would rather go with Startrescue than pay an excess.
