No I do not know anything of it I owed on a very account which I paid they sent that to a collectors but I had proof I had paid it all, I had a next account back then and still do have it to this day, would they allow an ex of mine to open account?1

I have no idea, but if your ex had access to all of your personal information, it's certainly possible that s/he could have opened an account in your name.Beck7uk2 said:No I do not know anything of it I owed on a very account which I paid they sent that to a collectors but I had proof I had paid it all, I had a next account back then and still do have it to this day, would they allow an ex of mine to open account?
I would sit tight and await whatever correspondence arrives. Now they know who you are and where you live, I would assume you'll receive some correspondence. Then you should come back here and ask for advice on next steps.1 -
Thank you for your help I feel like such an idiot, they sent probably 3 letters I just checked them in the bin thinking it was for the very account I had paid, this is going to have me worried sick now.Aylesbury_Duck said:

Personally I wouldn't be worried if the debt is yours or not, if nothing has been done in 20 years.
The debt would be statute barred without a County Court Judgement
So all they can do is write letters and call, normally threatening court action
Just tell them debt is statute barred and they will stop, as if they don't it's classed harassment.
They buy this kind of debt for peanuts, as they know some will pay up.

I will Google some of the things you have said so I don’t waste any more of your time, asking what they mean, thank you very much for your help today.HillStreetBlues said:Personally I wouldn't be worried if the debt is yours or not, if nothing has been done in 20 years.

For what it is worth OP, my husband recently randomly recieved a letter from a debt collection agency chasing a debt to a utility company which proved to relate to a property in which he was a lodger nearly 30 years ago. He has never had an account with said utility company (which didn't exist at the time he lived at the property in question) and we have no idea how his name ended up being linked to the debt (we can only conjecture). He explained as much to the company, who later wrote again to confirm no further action would be taken. Your situation sounds similar and I'd hope that now you've explained yourself they'll take no further action on it.

If you're concerned about accounts that may have been opened in your name without your knowledge, check your credit files to validate the accuracy of what's recorded against you:Beck7uk2 said:No I do not know anything of it I owed on a very account which I paid they sent that to a collectors but I had proof I had paid it all, I had a next account back then and still do have it to this day, would they allow an ex of mine to open account?
