Changing from Virgin Broadband

Hi

I'm getting Virgin installed soon (hopefully after some delays!)

This is the first time broadband will have been put in the house so the delays were caused by cabling work outside.

I'm going on an 18 month deal for broadband and TV. My question is in 18 months if I decide to switch (Eg to BT broadband and Sky) am I likely to encounter a lot more delays with BT cabling outside or can they us the cables that have been laid for Virgin. I mean the cables out in the pavement/street not the one coming into the house.

Thanks

The cabling for Virgin is unique to them. Just about everyone else comes over OpenReach cabling.

  • OP, if it is a VM cable service then as Victor says is correct. If it was Openreach who came out to fix the cables to your property (your normal phone line) and you are getting VM through your normal phone line, then any company can supply using that. Depends where you live, but the VM BB speeds via cable are way above what most can get through their phone line, for now at least.

Just a tip, but put a reminder in your phone for 17 months time to contact VM to renegotiate your contract. Unless you are on a basic package, you should either be able to negotiate a reduced price on current package, or more likely, get more features for a similar price in 18 months time. I've been with them about 7 years and pay about the same as when I started, with far more content and faster BB than 7 years ago. I usually use the online chat function to negotiate.

VM ditched their service over standard phone lines years ago.

I've just been told that the installation has been delayed again so thinking about abandoning it and getting BT or something. It was meant to be installed on Wednesday

Third time it has been postponed due to external cabling work required. Last week 2 vans appeared and 4 guys got out, had a chat with each other for couple mins then left, didn't look like they tried to do anything.

Do i just contact Openreach to get a cable installed to allow me to get BT or another broadband supplier?

You can't deal directly with Openreach.  You will need to go to one of the ISPs ie. BT or many of the others out there.  They then place a contract with Openreach to cable to your premises.
