I didn't say they want money without the work. I was just pointing out not all breeders are good and take great care of their dogs. I am well aware of how much work having a mum and her puppies is.

I'll edit my post as I wasn't replying to you. My apologies.

    No problem. Thank you.
  • Please don’t give up on adoption. There are thousands of dogs being put to sleep daily in the UK due to over breeding. The rescue I’m heavily involved with regularly takes in full litters of unsold puppies of every pedigree from greedy breeders. It’s absolutely heartbreaking at the moment & every person that adopts saves a life plus free’s up a space for another xx

Back in 2019 wanting a dog but NOT a puppy - anything from 1yr+ I was prepared to consider, I visited several rescues and struggled to find one that suited our household. Either the breeds were unsuitable eg lots of greyhounds (beautiful dogs) but said weren't suitable for mixing with smaller dogs - we have a family who visit who all have small dogs, such as chihuahuas  . Or the dogs needed a household that didn't suit ours - eg adult household only, daughter was 15 at the time. I asked if I could be put on a 'let know' list and was told they didn't do this (can't remember which charity, (but a national chain) and to keep checking the website. One day 3 suitable dogs were uploaded, I picked daughter up from school and drove straight to the rescue centre, all 3 had already gone.

The one place I could have got a dog and we were on the brink of getting was a place that were fetching dogs in from abroad (though I don't think we realised this). The day before I was due to go and get one (we'd looked round a few times) a friend mentioned her God-daughter had worked there and the animals had health issues that often didn't come to light until after the owner had adopted. I checked this out with a friend who is a Vet and she confirmed the story. I hadn't realised she was actually one of the Vets for this rescue - because she worked at a nearby practice. Vet friend told me that the rescue had been told by them to stop importing ill dogs.

Still wanting a dog months down the line and getting nowhere with rescue, we bought a puppy instead. I don't recall a single

. For a long time I felt bad about this  and thought there must have been something we overlooked in trying to get a rescue. A year later my Vet friend had exactly the same issue,  she couldn't find a  rescue dog that met with her requirements of having both other pets and children and I thought I can't be alone in my experience.

I've told the above story on here before and get comments along the lines of I'm mistaken in what happened (I'll fall short of saying I've been accused of lying). I'll say I've been on here years and don't recall ever making something up. This is my experience. I found difficulties in trying to adopt an older  recue  dog and don't recall in the months that I was looking one puppy coming in.

Maybe the situation post pandemic is different. Perhaps it was just the rescues closer to us and it's not the same everywhere  or if you are have circs where you don't have restrictions as to what dog you adopt - so expand your search.

Unless a resue knows the background of a dog and can assess it  they cannot risk rehoming with children. A stray ode has no background history with it. A hand n may or may not have a truthful history supplied with it.

Not every rescue, especially those run by volunteers, have the time or experience or money to ensure a dog will be safe with children.

The rescue for my favourite breed say they are not suitable to rehome with young children. I have had three dogs over the years - two at the same time at one point- and had  a baby, then another cild who both grew up with them with no problems.

Rescues  rules are usually from past experience and liability insurance restrictions.

Children are not the only restriction than can apply- flats, communal gardens, no enclosed grden ( farm or small holding) , applicant too old, no samll dogs or furries, no cats.

There are rescues who will rehome in these circumstances but you need to find them and I can understand people feel rejected and give up.

A friend rehomed and ex racing greyhound. She went  on holiday to with her parents , who had Jack Russel terriers.  To her relief the dogs got on amazingly  despite warnings  that greyhounds cannot be rehomed with cats or small animals.
