A group of 3 friends are going on holiday and the flights have been booked together, and paid for using one of the friends relative's credit card. The relative is not going on the holiday and has collected each person's flight cost. My question is, are the costs of the flights covered on the travel insurance taken out by the 3 friends?

The mechanism via which the payment was made shouldn't affect the success of a claim, so if the policy covers the scenario under which a claim would be made then all should be good....0

Policy always covers the traveler not the payer0
