Widowed parent Bereavement payment

Hi...my partner died in march 2017, so I'm now entitled to the widowed parents allowance backdated to august 2018. Its very confusing. I had to go part time after his passing as we have 2 children, one at 6 and 11. Now they are 12 and 17.
I was forced onto the benefit system for help. Its been an awful journey I have to be honest. Impossible to earn more money and being on minimum wage Its not been the best. Now I'm obviously facing a backdated payment that I guess universal credit are going to try take back, seen as they take this benefit pound for pound. I've been beside myself deciding what's best to do but I've taken the leap and applied. I found a remedial order on gov.uk saying that all backpayments of WPA have to be disregarded and classed as capital! Yet UC on the phone are making there own rules up and know nothing of this. So i insisted they read it and its now been applied to my journal to refer back too. Anyone been in this situation yet and had to face the backdated payment with regards to UC? Last thing I want is to be worse off but going forward this WPA will be better for me as my daughter is off to uni in Sept so the universal credit I get for her will stop anyway

I think they make things more difficult to try to put people off. Hope you get sorted soon and yes it will be better in the long run especially with going to Uni, good luck, don’t give up.
