Car key insurance

I had a scare recently when I thought I had lost my keys (false alarm fortunately). This led me to ponder whether car key insurance is worthwhile. It's not included as standard with my car policy but I can buy a bolt-on or stand-alone.
What do these policies cost and how do they work?

My second key is always at home.
If I lost my keys while out shopping for example would an insurer pay to replace my lost keys (house key cost is trivial but car fob would cost about £250 according to Timpsons) or does insurance only pay for a taxi home to get the spare?

Thanks in advance

Each policy will be different however looking at Aviva for example Key Cover is standard on Comp and in the case of you losing a key will result in all your car locks being changed/recoded and keys replaced... they dont just replace the key as that in theory means someone is walking around with a way to take your car. For them no excess applies and it doesnt impact the NCD

There isnt cover for the taxi home to get the spare.

You'd expect some others, particularly budget policies, to not be as full coverage.

I lost my car keys a few months ago and ended up having to fork out for a new key that cost £130! For the sake of £18 for the year I've now got car key insurance through Key Assist who also did my initial replacement.
