If they can't spend the 5 minutes looking at their own files then surely they can't expect you to do the job for them.
  • The council will know which band every property in your street is in?
They can use Google Earth to discover if the building footprint has increased
I think you have misunderstood their question
You will be very unpopular if your “ rich” neighbours suddenly find themselves in a higher band
    ”Loose lips sink ships”
  • After improving your property, until or IF you ever sell it, your Band won't increase. The L/A may place an Improvement marker [the letter 'I'] against it on the VOA/Council Tax Band site, which you can view. So, those who choose to improve then stay put and enjoy it, benefit. It's the new purchasers of "improved" properties who WILL BE subjected to any higher bandings the L/A decide upon.

I don't think this is 'grassing up' neighbours. If you are able to ascertain which Council Tax band their properties fall into, then your local council should be just as capable of doing it.

It's cut and dried - it is up to the council to check if people are on the correct band, not you. It won't benefit you and if the neighbours found out they won't be very happy. My neighbours next door on one side, and next door but one on the other side have both had loft extensions giving them an extra bedroom and bathroom - perhaps I should report them!
  • I would report the neighbours without hesitation.  Why should you pay more tax than you need?  Due to data confidentiality laws the neighbours will never be able to find out that you reported them.  Just do it.
  • If you do, don't be surprised if people passing you in the street suddenly start singing:
    Tell-tale-tit!
    Your tongue shall be slit,
And all the dogs in the town
    Shall have a little bit.
  • Firstly it’s the VOA that band properties not the Council so this conversation would have been with them 2nd The VOA know the band of every single property in the UK so I doubt they would have asked that. 3rd and most importantly. MIND YOUR BUSINESS
Starting this comping thing again wish me luck

How does reporting the neighbour reduce the amount you pay??

  • Council tax banding only changes when you extend your home or sell it!
This isn't reporting it to the council, just being a dirty snitch as nothing is going to come of it.
