I saw this notification in the app today... it's first I've heard of the plan and it's already imminent.

Keeping Online Shopping Secure

We're changing how you confirm it's really you using your card when shopping online. At the moment, there are three options that pop-up. From 16 February, you'll only be able to use the Barclays app as it's the most secure - remember to have your push notifications turned on.

The three options it refers to at the moment are:
  1. Through the app
  2. SMS Text message
  3. Pin Sentry code
I suspect this might catch non-app users out, although I'm not sure if it's only for those who already have the app installed on a device.

I've personally found the app a bit clunky for this purpose. The verification requests stay in the notifications area for ages, so I've been using the sentry codes instead.

What does everyone else here think? Do you agree this is a bit sudden?

Thete must be many Barclays customers without a smartphone and the app, so I suspect this is meant for those who currently have the app.installed

Natwest also started sending the login/verification codes in the app as opposed to text, I assume still people without a app registered to account might get alternative option
  • My elderly mother was unable to make an online payment at the weekend as the only authentication offered was via the Barclays app, which she doesn’t use. Like many elderly people she just doesn’t trust online banking so like many others this will leave her unable to make payments online. Surely there has to be an alternative authentication system offered by Barclays?

Do you mean that your mother was unable to set up a new payee using the online interface (browser not app)?

It seems that she uses online banking but not a smartphone app. Is the PINSentry + card method no longer available?

She doesn’t use the banking app. She was trying to buy something online but had no way of authenticating without setting up the banking app. No other method of authentication was offered

Just seems counterintuitive. If she's happy to shop online and risk potential malware or debit card details being compromised, how is that any safer than a secure banking app (which needs to be as regulators demand). This is likely why no alternatives are offered now, if one shops online its likely they'll bank digitally too.

I don’t disagree, but she’s terrified of being scammed and people getting access to her accounts. Reading the Daily Mail probably doesn’t help! But I doubt she’s the only elderly person with this problem.

Alot of the naysayers I had with digital banking when I was a personal banker just didn't understand it, want to understand it or didn't make time for it. I always use to ask why and get them to elaborate on their concerns and normally alleviate it, 9 times out of 10 my customer would leave with the app installed on their phone and feeling more confident.
I do agree there's a lot of scaremongering out there, but scams only happen if someone falls for it and most people know not to answer the phone from 'the bank'. If there is they can hang up and call back later using a number they know and trust e.g on the back of their debit card
