Landline - still worth it?

Getting someone to speak to at VM is the main challenge at the moment... Can't offer anything online. Tried the phone queue and gave up after an hout. Tried the online chat queue and gave up after an hour. Now shunted onto Whats App0

So I got £128.85 per month (£150.35 from April) down to £78 per month. Happy with that!As others on here implied, it was £80 with no landline and £78 with landline rental included??!! Barmy. Had to take an O2 SIM card as well, which I may or may not use.0

We've probably been paying for a service that hasn't been working for many months, which is annoying but our fault reallyAssuming you are on the Virgin cable network...Virgin should have sent you a little cable about 50mm long that plugs in to the back of the router and your phone plugs in to the other end. They should have also sent you an email giving you a date when the land line would be disconnected and the telephone plugged in to the router so that you can use the VOIP service they now provide.I had the little cable posted to me, but never had the email. First I found out about it was when I needed to make a call and found no dial tone. For a company in the communications business, quite a shoddy service.Oh, and quality of voice is pretty dire at times.

Could you please clarify where you are referring to:
a) getting rid of landline as in removing the 'calls' part of a broadband package - e.g.
b) wanting to not pay line rental at all?
If the former, then while you may be about to remove the calls part of a package (effectively moving to a broadband only package), most broadband is delivered to peoples houses via the landline cables so you'd most likely still need to pay line rental.
If it's the latter as I expect, please be aware that the vast majority of broadband connections end up supplied by the physical (landline) cables running into the house. People often wrongly assume that landline = phone when in todays world, this couldn't be any further from the truth. The vast majority of people with broadband only packages will use landline cables, and thus need to pay line rental to maintain these lines.
Generally if you want to avoid line rental all together, you should consider mobile or satelite broadband (though these may not be as consistent or may work out more expensive). The other way would be exploring 'full fibre' options, wherein the fibre connections run to the premises (e.g. Virgin).1 -
Mister G - Thanks for the info - I wasn't aware. We got cable installed in our street 7 years ago ish, about 25 years after the rest of the city, so hadn't looked at offnet suppliers for a while.0
