Tipping/feeding removal men

  • I wouldn't feed tradesman but I generally do tip if they have done a good job. If there is a couple of them, I would generally do £20 each or so.

Do you tip the bin men/women, the person on the till at Tesco's, the barista at Starbucks. I'm guessing no as you pay for that service. This isn't any different.

Tipping is an Americanisation system due to low wages/tip based wage contracts. We don't have that system here.
Do you not tip the bin men? Most people give them something at Christmas

Do they? Only 15% according to this survey (and that was 2013). Never really heard of it as being a thing anywhere I've lived.
  • The only person I have ever tipped is my old postman and that was because he used to chat to me all the time, sign for my parcels and leave them in my shed without complaint. He was fantastic and deserved every penny.

Otherwise, no. I strongly do not believe in tipping. Give them a drink if you want to offer and if a tradesmen is doing a long job, maybe get them some biscuits but otherwise no.

ALWAYS offer & have supplies tea/coffee, biscuits etc for any workpersons.  It's a decent gesture to make.

But expect often to have offer declined (many bring their own stuff with them..)

That does surprise me. It’s a ten year old survey though but if anything would have thought it would probably be less now. Maybe it’s an area thing but I live in the north and most of us tend to either tip or provide a Christmas present (chocolates/wine)

I suspect its also in part how/what sort of dwelling you live in (flats -v- houses etc).

When living with my parents some Xmas money was always put in a clear wallet inside the bin lid but then in those days the bin men came up the drive to collect them and there were unattached lids they had to lift off. In Mexico its the same other than you put about 50p in the bin every time they collect.

Living now in flats with large communal waste bins which the lorry lifts etc I'm not sure the mechanism you'd tip them unless you are free to hang about on the street on the days they attend.
  • I tipped my removal men when I moved last year because they were just awesome and worked insanely hard packing and moving all my accumulated stuff! I also supplied tea/coffee and a load of biscuits.

What about the solictor, the surveryor if you had one etc?
  • Looks like I have started a bit of a debate…

I’ll have tea, coffee and biscuits available in the morning and maybe some cans of cold drinks. We need to put the power back on in the new house but they’ve been warned this might not go smoothly to get the kettle boiled.

I tip if the service is good. Two moves back (over 10 years ago) , the two men who did my move worked very hard past the time allocated for the move (a morning) to ensure the move was complete. They got £20 each and a 4 pack of beer. My last move (last year) was a disaster - man in charge said he underestimated (despite being shown round the whole property) and hadn't allocated enough time. I offered to pay extra but he wasn't interested and the move was only part completed. No-one got tipped for that move.
