Strange UC issue- Been paid too much

Hi all,

Just some advice please on a weird UC issue,

Have woken this morning to a big UC lump sum in my account ( approx £2k), I have checked and it isn't showing my wages into the claim.

I thought it must be to do with my work and maybe they were delayed informing HMRC or something but I have logged into my Gateway and Jan 23 is showing on there so not sure what has happened!

I will leave a note in my journal and try and call them later this afternoon

Obviously I will pay it back, I know its a mistake but wanted to know how they will reclaim it, will they amend the amount I should have had and I pay it back via UC in one lump sum or do they take it from future payments?

Never been in this situation before!!

  • Ask for a Report Your Earnings From Employers form, fill it in with your net earnings and they will recalculate and you can either pay it all back, or they will deduct from future claims. I think most they can take is 25% of any monthly claim.
  • You could try calling the UC phone number so it also on the system that you phoned and ask them that way to maybe get put through to somebody who could help you. If it is an extra 2k, don't spend any of it and ask them if there are any account details you can have to pay it back asap if this is wrong. A phone call might help clear it up faster and if somebody in the right department can give you info to pay it back right away. That is a worry you don't need and not your fault, but them causing you stress due to errors on their end. I hope you get it sorted asap.

There was a temporary error last week whereby earnings were not automatically reported to UC as normal. It's likely too late to fix it now for this payment, but they should now have received your earnings (as the error is now fixed and it's working again) and that will create an overpayment that you will have to pay back in due course. This potentially affected anyone whose AP ended on 9th and earnings were not received going into the morning of the 10th.

  • Thanks all, that explains it!

Was speaking to someone else about it and she doesn't get hers until the 16th but it is showing the same with her in her payment schedule- although may get corrected by then

Imagine it could have impacted a number of people so a costly error potentially!
  • Just to say thanks to everyone on here its all sorted

They admitted to it being a UC mistake and they had the RTI info it just had not updated for some reason on the system.

    Mind now at ease!
