Vauxhall Lifetime Warranty

Hi I have a Vauxhall lifetime Warranty on a Astra 2013 from new only done 60000 miles, but now there is something wrong with the gearbox. Vauxhall want £500 to strip it down and check which parts are faulty then they will tell me
if it is covered by the warranty. In the warranty it say's the engine and gearbox are covered. But if they are not covered they want £5600 for a new gear plus a new clutch as well. All help appreciated.
Thank you

Derek

Seems pretty standard, what help do you need?

    Are you the original owner?

That's probably more than the car is worth!

It's not as simple as 'engine and gearbox are covered', unfortunately. Only certain components are covered, which are listed.
Clutch for instance is not listed, neither are synchromesh cones.

If the clutch has done 60k miles and 10 years it has not lasted too badly.

It's not clear why they want £500 to find out what is wrong.

Have you had an annual service with a Vauxhall Authorised Repairer since you bought the car? If so, shouldn't they have discovered any problems or any potential problems? Why charge you again (in addition to servicing) to simply diagnose the fault?

This is what their warranty says -

    https://www.vauxhall.co.uk/owners/insurance-and-warranty/warranty/lifetime-warranty.html

If your car hasn't been serviced annually by a Vauxhall authorised rep, the warranty is void.

There is an amendment which states :

"as of November 2020 it is no longer a requirement for the Vauxhall Retailer to activate and validate the warranty on the anniversary of the registration date. It is however still necessary for the vehicle servicing to be routinely undertaken in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and in line with the specified servicing schedules."

I wouldn't spend anything else on that car. It's ten years old now and not worth throwing any more money at, imho.

I'd take it to a different dealer and ask for them to accept it in part exchange. I did that with my last old car and was given £500 for it, even though it had failed an MOT and needed tons of work. So it's worth asking. If they won't accept it then you could sell it for scrap.

But charging to diagnose is just plain cheeky.

    Hi
The five hundred I am guessing is for what called the diagnosis and my Mercedes people I think charge over 200 an hour just to put thei compter on the car and if fault is not found or a warranty fault then I pay the 200 odd quid an hour and it can take longer than an hour to run a full diagnostics/

What appears to be the fault and why would it not be covered if tis an engine/gearbox problem if it does need striping down?
Could it be they are trying to say that when dismantled etc if incorrect parts oil etc used then not covered?

We had a problem with the Overland jeep we had years ago and I was charged well over a hundred quid to check as a steering fault and they warned me like you . I had no option as car was refusing to drive perfectly straight as it used to and it as a fault with the steering rack not damage and fixed and  I did not pay for the diagnosis

    Good luck

  • Why is charging to diagnose a fault "cheeky"?  How often do you work for nothing?

Charging to diagnose the problem is not 'cheeky'. It may involve considerable time to remove and then strip down the gearbox. Once you know what the fault is, replacing the component and the gearbox is the easy part. Diagnosing the fault is the bulk of the labour cost. If this is a dealer quote, as it appears to be, the labour cost will be at least £100 an hour. So quoting 5 hours for this is perfectly reasonable.

What are the symptoms? Could the fault be the clutch, in witch case it's likely that you will pay for it, but not as much as £5,600

    Hi
I was thinking that but I felt that good mechanics would be able to easily tell via a few tests

So dealer is expected to strip engine & gearbox out. Then strip gearbox to find issue. All for nothing?

If it's a warranty issue = No charge.
If it is not, then OP can ask to put back together & they will get it fixed elsewhere after charge for inspection work.
