“The eco-bonus — or “centodieci” (110) as it’s known in Italy — is a government incentive that allows home owners who improve the energy efficiency of their homes or make them more earthquake-proof to claim back 110 per cent of the costs. The initiative has been so popular that pretty much every builder in Italy is busy with that, and other works have stalled.”

Who could possibly have guessed that would happen? :)

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I used to work for an upmarket Italian bathroom company once upon a time. Possibly different now but then in Italy home improvements not only attracted a lower rate of VAT but were tax-deductible (had to explain that the UK did not do this to the Italian management who were disappointed at UK sales figures. Similarly, the Italians would quote home ownership stats for the various markets & we would explain that people who had bought their ex-council houses for less than the RRP of some of the companies baths, showers etc. were unlikely prospects  :p

This thread reminded me that it is not a unusual sight in some parts of the eastern med to see lovely properties with unfinished concrete columns with re-bars sticking out the top. When I asked about this was told it was to save paying taxes as property was not finished and if any grants had been made they did not need to be repaid until it was finished.
