Cancellation Rights

Hello, just checking.
I ordered a coat in a store, and paid for it. I have now decided against it. The coat is awaiting my collection in the store. Am I right in thinking that after a few days, the company will take the coat back into stock, and process a refund for me?

Not unless you've been told that's what they normally do, no. Otherwise what I would expect to happen is that after a few days they'll remind you to collect your coat.

Might help if you told us which company it is, assuming it's a chain we're likely to have heard of.

    Ordered as in what?

Something they normally stock, but did not have in stock in your size, or special order made for you?

As it is. It is really down to the retailer as not a distance purchase. Major retailer, may. Smaller independent may not.

Was this a face-to-face transaction in store?  You'd have more rights if not, but I'd have thought it's relatively unusual to be paying when ordering out of stock items in-store rather than on collection....

You don't have any rights due to a change of mind if you purchased the coat in the store.

Talk to the retailer as you certainly will not be getting an automatic refund.

M&S does this but states the fact that if you don't collect it will be returned to stock and a full refund given.  You need to check the T&Cs.

Probably not, unless you ask them to. Is it a small shop or a big chain? If it's a big chain then they will probably have a process for it, a small business probably is expecting you to collect it and I personally wouldn't refund for something that a customer didnt collect.

I have found that for online orders to be collected in store on a specified date, however are you sure that applies to orders made in store ?

No, they will presumably contact you and request that you collect it within x days.  You have no right to a refund just because you've changed your mind unless their own store policy allows you to. You contracted to buy the coat and paid for it.

They will automatically refund you if you don’t turn up. Expect some reminder messages but if you ignore them at some point you’ll get the cost refunded.

We don't know who the retailer is, I wouldn't bet on that outcome if it is not a major store.
