Hi all, I'm trying to find where my dad held accounts, he had numerous accounts and switched accounts quite frequently then appears to have switched everything to online a few years back but I don't know his phone or PC password. I did the "death notification service" thing and basically ticked every single bank they had, but that doesn't cover all banks, particularly the newer ones. My dad was quite tech-y and liked a bargain and a market leading rate (the apple never falls far from the tree....) so I have been calling round Atom and a few others I can think of that aren't on the DNService, but has anyone got any other tips for this situation? I have tried and tried guessing passwords but no joy. Phone shop and mobile provider can't help. Might it be worth trying Samsung and Google to access his accounts?  Lastly, I did the "my lost accounts" thing as well, nothing so far. One thing I wasn't sure about, does it actually search for recently active accounts? Or just ones thay havent been touched for years? Also, there are so many old defunct banks on there and it won't let you tick more than one member of the same group. If I tick one member of the group, does that search all accounts from that group, or do I need to tick the group "parent" on that site... hope this last bit makes sense, I am exhausted right now. Oh and lastly, is it worth trying experian and the credit agencies, will they tell me anything if all I have currently is death certificate/proof I'm next of kin? And will they have details of savings anyway, or only current accounts with overdrafts on them?  Any advice gratefully received.

  • Do you know which account(s) he used for his pension (or other income) and direct debits?  We trawled back through FILs statements for seven years tracking every investment in and out.  We missed one account but only because the  cash hadn’t transited through the current account during the time period as he’d been transferring from one bond to another with the same provider.  But it was found anyway as he had a further account with the same provider.

It’s more problematic if he used cheques, but he doesn’t sound like he would have?

Worth trying, but be aware it only classes accounts as 'dormant' if they have been unused for 15+ years. Many financial institutions class them as dormant well before 15 years are up, and Gretel includes these 'younger' dormant accounts.
