Energy Bill Support Scheme Alternative Funding

I'm someone who has not received the £400 energy grant, and was under the impression I would be eligible for the alternative funding scheme but am now unsure.

My situation: I live in a detached rented property on the same grounds as my landlord. They have their own domestic electricity supply with meter, which is then sub-metered into the property I rent. Because of this, I never received a £400 energy grant. My local MP wrote to whichever body handles this, and I received a long-winded answer which didn't explicitly say whether someone in my situation would or wouldn't receive a grant through the alternate fund. (they should bear in mind when writing to constituents, that we're not MP's, so a simple answer to a question would suffice). I also pay separate council tax, and have a completely different address.

Anyhow, after the reviewing the alternate fund, I'm unsure if I can/can't apply for it. Under the heading, who can't apply, it states: 'you do not need to apply if you or your landlord has a domestic energy meter, or pay directly to an energy provider.'  I presume this means the landlord has a meter for the property I live in, which they don't, or they have a direct energy account for the property I live in, which they don't.

Any ideas?

  • The impression I get (bear in mind I am no expert) is that the fund is for people who pay for their energy but didn't qualify for the original £400 because they have no direct domestic electricity account with a licensed supplier.

None of the exceptions would appear to apply to you - you have a sub-meter rather than an individual meter (presumably what makes it a sub-meter is that it doesn't have an MPAN - can the experts here confirm/correct?) and you don't pay a supplier for your energy.  Neither do any of these apply:
    • in purpose-built student accommodation
    • in a care home and do not pay any of your fees
    • on a boat with a continuous cruising licence
    • on a non-permanent caravan or mobile home site
I haven't seen any actual guidance for it yet, but based on the current information it seems you probably should be eligible.  You have nothing to lose by applying anyway.

Thanks - I'm thinking the same. When I can, I will apply and see what happens.
