Anglian Water Default (Registered multiple times) - Help Please!

Sorry if this has been covered elswhere - I searched the forum but couldn't find a definitive answer for this situation.
I have a default from Anglian Water on my credit file, and it seems this default has been re-registered multiple times (for various reasons) over the last 6 years.
The original default was registered in January 2017. Anglian Water say they then deleted this default due to an incorrect meter reading, and re-registered the default in May 2018 as the bill was still outstanding.
I moved house in June 2020.
In October 2020 Anglian Water deleted the default again (they say due to recalculated charges on the account).
I moved house again on 27th August 2021
Anglian Water have then re-registed the default as the balance is still oustanding, so now the default date on my credit file is 27th August 2021 (the new default date is the exact same day I moved into my new house)
So they short version is: It seems every time I move house, or Anglian Water decides to 'recalculate charges', they delete the old default and re-register it with a new start date.
To add insult to injury, Anglian Water sold this debt to Orbit Services on 1st August 2021, yet the default date on my credit report is 27th August 2021 - are they allowed to do this? How can the account be defaulted on that date if they no longer owned the debt?
I have been searching everwhere for answers but getting nowhere - surely this is against regulations?
Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.
