I understand the time frame can differ massively depending on supplier but wondered how users of So have fared over the years.

my bill is always sent on the 2nd but thats the day i started my switch which is complete and running. i never got the bill on the 2nd so assume beginning the switch halted the normal process and now awaiting the final bill.

my So account is now down to the bones info wise so the switch has registered at their end. i have a massive credit balance and would like to get it over to my new supplier ASAP.

thank you.

Energy companies have up to 6 weeks to produce a final bill and most of them seem to take several weeks. The final/starting readings have to be verified and agreed by both companies.

  • I would expect any credit balance owed would be sent to you and not your new supplier?

Have you had your final bill with the correct meter read(s) showing the balance owed?

My final bill with So Energy was issued on 1 November 2019 for period 4/10 to 16/10/2019. I was in credit £173.15. On the Final Bill it stated that this would be paid by 5pm on 13/11/19. And it was. Just my experience.  It may be completely different now. And just to confirm, this is paid to you, not to your new supplier. With them you start at £0.00
  • A few months ago, EDF refunded me within about 7 days, to my surprise. So Energy took the full 6 weeks.

Did you keep your So energy direct debit active till after you got the refund?

I know we are advised to do so, but I always worry they may continue to take direct debits from us even though we have switched away to another provider.

Do people on this forum ever sleep at night worrying about what might and what might not happen? Yes, it can happen that a further payment is taken if the switch goes through after the DD payment instruction has been sent from the old supplier to the Bank. The way to avoid this is to initiate your switch a day after the payment was taken. You will then be with the new supplier well before the next DD payment to the old supplier is due.

Yes, I left it active, nothing further was taken.

Just to confirm, my switch from So Energy to Octopus completed on February 15th.
I left my direct debit active, and no further DDs were taken.
I received my final bill from So on February 28th and was advised at the same time I would receive my refund by 5pm on March 10th.
My refund from So did in fact reach my bank account on March 8th.
So a total of 3 weeks from the day I was no longer their customer, to receive my refund from So, which I thought was pretty good, all things considered.

Yes can also confirm similar timeline: -

    Switch to Octopus 04/12
    So Energy main refund 24/12

To be fair, apart from an IHD issue they never fixed in 2yrs and Octopus did in less than 2 days, once switched over to them - So Energy were generally reliable and good billing/refund wise.
