Santa Fe v's Toureg
Options
Hi all,
My car is coming to an end, the turbo is done in and its clocked 140,000 miles, so we are looking for a new car, one that we plan on keeping till it falls apart, we need a reliable motor that has plenty of room and can tow quite a bit of weight, we have been looking for a wee while now and have quickly discounted various cars.
We are between the Volkswagon Toureg and a Hyundai Santa Fe, was just wondering if anyone has any advice on which one to get, which one will last longer, what to look out for etc
Thanks
El

Have a look at car reviews - I find Harry’s Garage on YouTube pretty honest. Or try a Google search for SantaFe v Touareg as you’ll likely find a video or review comparing the two cars in isolation. As another option, had you considered the Skoda Kodiaq?2

This is somewhat like comparing chalk and cheese. The Santa Fe is, if memory serves, a jacked up family hatchback with, in 4WD form, some pretentions of being an off-roader. The Touareg is an endlessly capable, honest and true SUV that is better than the Santa Fe in every conceivable way. Be aware, however, that the average second hand Touareg will be one breakdown from the scrapyard and that they are immensely expensive to run; how does £300 for a tyre strike you?
The Touareg, being related to the Porsche Cayenne, is also a high performance car. Do you need such a thing? If not, we revert to the Santa Fe; if so, there are probably better things available.1 -
A reliable car which will last for years, can tow and I assume needs 4wd from what is being considered.
A Subaru of whichever flavour meets your requirements and budget, probably Forester or Outback.2 -

Thanks for the reply,
Yeah we had looked at the Skoda and it just wasnt enough, we looked at that the volvo xc90, x trail, sportage etc and it came down to between those 2,
Have watched some videos already they are kinda pointing at what Ditzy Mitzy is saying so will need to think more I think

I totally get what your saying they are two very different cars, surprisingly not as much difference in money as I expected though £33k for the Santa Fe £39 for the Toureg both similar mileage.
Can you recommend another car to look at ? were looking for something that can pull 2.5 tonne effortlessly with good lumbar support heated seats and steering wheel ( husband has problems with hands and back, heat helps)0 -

I was going to suggest a Forester as well. We've got one - 2010 reg, 6 years old when we bought it and it's still going strong. Brilliant for towing, very capable off-road and a god-send in the snow. Proper 4WD, low-ratio box when needed, gallons of luggage and seating space, can't fault it. Consumables and routine maintenance are pretty reasonable, and touch wood we've had no mechanical problems other than standard wear & tear items. The only down-side is that it's a tad thirsty, but not ridiculously so.1

Not sure the present Subaru range is as good as the past. I believe the old Forester was voted the no1 tow car, yet I read that the present one wouldn’t get near. For off-road and towing capability you’ll not likely beat Land Rover, perhaps a Discovery, Evoque? I’m presently in a Freelander and there’s many in the club forum use them to tow. Sadly it’s diesel so it’ll have to go before August when Khan expands ULEZ; the Discovery Sport would be my preferred replacement, followed by the Skoda1

Were looking for a diesel I have to admit, I did like the evoque but ruled out Land rover due to price ( although the Toureg we looked at was £40k)
I did look at the forester and yeah it doesnt seem to have the towing capabilities need either, I do think the Toureg is overkill ... but wonder if the Santa fe is the right fit

Hi
If you want the pan roof, sofa leather, heated rear seat, heated cool front seats, touch screen navi, blind spot assit, led lights, 7 seat and more i guess - go for the Santefe se - they come with a 5 yr warranty and perma 4x4 not a wanna be - been in one a few times as one of daughters has one - lovely car but not like my mb/gls but has loads of toys for the monet - their car they bought nexw in jan 2016, covered around 5ok i think, serviced by Hyundai and not gone wrong once. (that car lacks automatic braking - new one possibly has it)
The vw - feels more expensive but a lot less kit for the money, appears more classy but not a perma 4 wheel drive i think as i am think back to co-workers car - never had one looks nice - the build feel wins me on this one (not sure if this car as standard re autonomous braking)
Only you can decide but I am no towing guy but on the m-way recall seeing more vw's towing than
Thanks
