Blu ray installation

Have just bought a second Blu ray, the original is in the lounge working fine.
I'm sat here in the snug with my laptop, having watched DVD's on my old Acer player, so this is the next step. I bought an HDMI to HDMI cable, though a bit short in length. Plugged in correctly, but there's no output. The blu ray is functioning fine (I think that I can hear the blu ray spinning).
Have i hoped too much? Where do i go from here?

There is no cable you can buy to get a regular blu ray player designed for a TV to play through the laptop. You could do it with an external capture card maybe. But it might be a wiser investment to buy a second hand TV to watch your films on.
