Blu ray installation

Have just bought a second Blu ray, the original is in the lounge working fine.
I'm sat here in the snug with my laptop, having watched DVD's on my old Acer player, so this is the next step. I bought an HDMI to HDMI cable, though a bit short in length. Plugged in correctly, but there's no output. The blu ray is functioning fine (I think that I can hear the blu ray spinning).
Have i hoped too much? Where do i go from here?

Do you mean that you've plugged into the HDMI port in the laptop? I'm afraid that won't work as the laptop HDMI will only output and not take an input (there are some laptops that do but are pretty rare). What would have been better would have been a portable Bluray player that connects to the laptop via USB 3 - you could then use an app to play the bluray discs. This would work -

ut unable to tell if usb-1 2, or 3. can you provide link to ebay of cable i need (I dont use amazon)? thinking usb port took input, maybe?0

The external blu ray drive linked by Peter will come supplied with the cable you need to connect it to the laptop.
There is no cable you can buy to get a regular blu ray player designed for a TV to play through the laptop. You could do it with an external capture card maybe. But it might be a wiser investment to buy a second hand TV to watch your films on.1 -
thanks Lammy. A bit deflated, but thank you. not possible (you'd think with modern blu ray someone could decently put a package together, ho hum)0
