DIY Laying down driveway setts

We really want to tidy up the front of our house, an area of the drive was churned up with lorries when we had some work done a couple years ago and we can’t afford to relay it. Someone suggested using pink gravel which I like the idea of but I need a join where our tarmac meets a communal tarmac lane and was thinking about a sett area, I think it’s called a driveway apron or stone carpet maybe! We have quite a few single setts from a previous job and was wondering if I could use them to form a border between the tarmac and the area which will be gravelled. Has anyone done something similar? We would be using what we have already so aim is that we will do it ourselves and save money. Am I underestimating the work in this?

For a narrow strip of pavers/setts, I'd dig out a trench 250-300mm deep, put in a layer of well compacted hardcore (MOT1, or crushed rubble). Then bed the blocks down on a layer of concrete 100-150mm thick. That should stop the blocks from moving..

Thank you. Would you recommend a stihl saw to cut the tarmac where it’s still solid in places and to get a clean line ?

If you have access to one, sure.
Just make sure you use all the appropriate PPE please (goggle/facemask dust mast, ear defenders, etc).

How wide are you planning, I think it should be in the 2-3ft range to keep the stone off the tarmac.
  • I can make it as wide as need be at the moment. Theirs is an area churned up that by time I clean cut it could be more 4ft so might do it all that width to match it. It’ll be like an L
shape from running along original tarmac drive to go across in a line at the entrance.
