I had the zebra effect once on a canon and I now suspect that it was caused by an inksaver program that I had installed. I now refill my cartridges and sometimes get very light banding after having the ink carts out- but nothing like the zebra effect. I suspect its built in to stop you using non original carts. I chose my printer on the basis it was easy to re-fill . Epson lost a us law suit last year for having printers say the carts were empty when they weren't- so who knows what the manufacturers won't do? here's a link to a printer forum I like http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/0

About 5p or 8p.
>Re the tramline effect on the printed documents, is it that the colours have run out or just the cheapie cartridges?
Cheapie carts and a blocked nozzle
>If I only print in black and I set the print options to that effect, can I get away with not having colour cartridges in at all? It seems an expensive option to use a full set of colours just for cleaning cycles.
Nope, get a laser for low cost B/W printing0 -
I just got a "reconditioned" Brother from their Ebay website, DCP-330C multifunction for a really good price. Absolutely as new. Slight niggle about the cleaning cycle at every power-up, which takes a while, haven't checked to see if it can be disabled yet. They seem to be highly recommended though, and it certainly makes my old HP Deskjet seem primitive, and expensive with its all in one colour cartridge.0

Thanks everyone. Two more questions please..........
.... how can I unblock the nozzle?
.... does 'power up' mean switching on the electricity rather than just hitting 'print'? As I rarely print I usually switch the printer off at the socket.0 -

I think I have cured the tramlines. Hurrah!
In Properties I have changed the setting from Fast to Fast Normal and it seems to be cured.
This cleaning business seems to be costly in ink though. Is it cheaper to leave the printer switched on do you think? I probably only print a couple of times a month though.0
