Skiing Insurance - Double Cover Problem

Hi - hoping someone can help. My daughter is snow boarding in Morzine - Wednesday (2 days back) she fell and dislocated/fracture her wrist. She got treated - plaster cast I think + meds. She paid £750 ish I think for treatment with card.
She bought wintersports insurance in UK (Admiral who use CEGA), but also got cover with her lift pass for a few Euros extra. Her UK policy looks comprehensive, and should cover everything, with modest excess. I can't work out whats covered with the lift pass insurance, which is with Snow Risk/ Europ Assistance.

Question is which to claim from? We reported to the Uk insurers already just to ensure wee did all the right things.
Main claim covers medical expenses of £750 euros, plus a small sum for transport to the Medical centre (no Heli or anything like that) + unused lift pass. Lift pass cost was approx 200E for 4 days. She only used the pass for day #1, but also had to use it to get from Morzine to the Treatment centre in Avoriaz - higher up the mountain - on day #2.
Seems there are  3 options:

1. Claim from Admiral, but don't claim for the unused lift pass, and dont decalre there was a second policy (and dont claim on the other policy obviously) Seems the most straight forward, but she'd lose out on the unused lift pass. She has just told me though that she had to use the pass to get from Morzine to Avoriaz (where she had the treatment) the day after the accident to get the cast etc checked.

2. Claim from Admiral for everything including the pass cost, and dont declare the other policy (and dont claim on it). The risk is Admiral may notice the lift pass included the add on for the other policy, and say she should have claimed on that.

3. Claim from both, but explain clearly to each that there is another policy, but she isn't clear which policy covers what. This is the most honest way, but I fear may lead to disagreement about who is repsonsible for what. Are Admiral and Snow Risk really going to collaborate to get her the best result??

It seem horribly unfair that having paid twice over for insurance, she may not get her claim settled fairly.

Question is, what to do?

Insurance fraud probably isnt the right way to be heading but you only need to answer the questions they ask honestly and if you read both policies it'll tell you what their position is on if other insurance covers the same risk.

Some policies dont exclude anything if you are covered elsewhere and they dont ask and so no need for you to volunteer it. If both say they exclude cover if there is another policy dont get worried, in that circumstances they share the claim but it can add delay whilst they agree how this will be done.

Even if neither policy say anything about no cover if covered elsewhere then you still cannot claim off both (you didn't suggest it but its the direction of travel of your suggestions) for the medical expenses as that would be undue enrichment.
  • Thanks guys - to be 100% clear I am absolutely not trying to claim more than she would be due, ie claim twice for the same thing. But for example the Snow risk policy seems to cover "emergency medical aid" - but its not obvious what this actually  means. Was the care she received an emergency? I'm not sure - the T and Cs are open to interpretation.
And if policy #1 covers medical care but not lift pass, and policy #2 covers lift pass but not medical, then surely one would be entitled to claim from both?

In that scenario yes, just like if there was a really bad storm and your home and car got damaged by flying debris; you claim the car from car and home from home.

In your scenario it may be more complex, the pass may only be covered in conjunction with a claim against the emergency medical but the wording would have to say so. To keep on our analogies, you cannot claim for subsidence to your outdoor swimming pool unless your main property is also impacted

Thank you, I knew that and it did not read any other way.
If i doubt, consult the ins outfits as the last thing you want is to be hounded by these outfits
because their T&C's amy not be easy to read/follow

    Good luck

I would suggest that you claim from Admiral and answer the question about other insurances accurately. Admiral should deal with the claim. They may look to recover some of their costs from the insurer with the lift pass, but that will be between the insurers and should not affect you.
