Confused about Octopus & Energy Bill Support Scheme

In the process of switching to Octopus from Sainsburys Energy (EON) due to their progressively worsening customer service.

At Sainsbury’s, the government energy bill support payment went direct into the account as an additional payment each month on top of my DD.

Octopus are saying it’s already factored into my monthly DD, but my DD is virtually the same as it was at Sainsbury’s (where it was definitely not factored in)…  I am 99% sure I am overestimating my usage on my quote but have been unable to get my actual annual usage as recently made a lot of changes to our property.

Can someone explain to me how I’m going to benefit at Octopus if they’re saying it’s already factored in to my DD (and presumably I’ll not see that money when I apply for a refund of my inevitable overpayment?)

Thanks!

Octopus credit the EBSS monthly to your account. It's fairly arbitrary in your case, as you will only qualify for the last payment in March by the time you switch to them, if before 1/3.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks for clarifying.  The switch should be going through today / tomorrow so should be on track for March and Sainsburys have applied the £67 discount for Feb on my old account.

That's why it's not advisable to switch on the 1st day of the month.

  • It's factored in, in that without it your DD amount would be £67 higher.  So you are left with £67 more in your bank than you would otherwise have.  Then they add the credit onto your account.
