Elderly sister having her bungalow rewired

my elderly sister lives in a housing association bungalow , now the hs has decided that her bungalow doesn’t have enough sockets , not bothering with the other 22 identical bungalows . Anyway they have told her she has to put most of her furniture into storage and her car and dog into kennels. Also she can’t be in the bungalow during the day but they haven’t given her any idea where she’s supposed to put her furniture in storage or how she’s going to afford the cost of homing her pets or even where she’s supposed to go in March during the day . Sounds like she has to arrange for the warden controlled bungalow to be emptied , pets into kennels and looks like she might have to pay for a weeks stay in a local hotel

They can’t possibly allowed to do this ???

  • If she has not complained about the lack of sockets and the current ones are not at risk and you say the other "identical" dwellings are not being done, I would ask them to do it when she moves out or (sad to say) dies.  My HA are looking at new NSH's to work with Solar Panels, they installed last year.  I have told them I am happy with my current NSH's as they work fine with E7, they don't seem to be forcing me to have them installed, they can do it after I'm dead when they would have to paint and make good the damage that will be done to the walls. Hoping for both her and myself that it is no time soon!!  One of my neighbour's had a new kitchen installed the other year, she did not need to move out and the workmen moved anything out of the way, fridge, washing machine, cooker.

Have you spoken to the Housing Association yourself to discuss this?

I ask because I've sometimes been told this type of thing by elderly people in warden assisted accommodation, but when I speak to the people managing the accommodation, I find that a lot of the details have been "lost in translation".

I think that a Housing Association that manages warden assisted accommodation for elderly people might be more aware of the  needs of their vulnerable residents.

But maybe your elderly sister is much more reliable at passing on accurate information than the people I've dealt with!

Don't they know there is not much sun in the winter and certainly none at night.

If your sister has a lot of appliances and has to use extension leads to get enough sockets, then the HA might well decide the she is a fire risk, and that she needs more sockets to avoid the risk that she overloads a socket and causes a fire. If she has enough sockets, she can reasonably refuse to let them do the work. The worst they can do is try to evict her, but if this goes to court, the judge is likely to order that they pay to put her and her animals up somewhere, and to move and store her property if they insist that the work must be done now (e.g. if they were doing all the properties). Really the time to do the work is when she dies or moves out of the property as GibbsRule_No3. said.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

I am sorry to read this, I had to do similar to get all the floors replaced in my bungalow, but for two weeks.

I'm in the NE and storage of my furniture was £50 per week - but the actual removal costs to dismantle/take my furniture to storage and return it again was £600.  I found out that dog kennels here cost £20.00 per day, the cattery was £15.00.  Once I'd looked at ridiculous accommodation costs (peak season August)  I decided to stay here, get a chemical toilet (£250 as you have to book for two weeks minimum) as the bathroom was out of use, and camp in the concrete floored kitchen/lounge  with my pets.

Is this an option for your sister, or is every single room affected?  Can she claim any of this money back from the HA?

I'm not sure of the tenancy rights for your sister but there were several very well informed comments below this article in The Guardian the other day that you might find helpful.
