LLs witholding TA

Hello All,
Was wondering if you could offer any advice re problem with my LLs. When we moved into property 8 mths ago I stupidly forgot to take photocopy of tenancy agreement before posting it back to them as I had a lot of things going on at the time. I have been in contact with both of them to request a copy (first request was about four months ago) but they keep fobbing me off with excuses. Either saying they will get the other one to sort it out or most recently, it is with the mortgage company as they needed it for their records and they are having trouble finding it.
I have not mentioned to LLs we are planning to look for somewhere new as we are not going to get something straight away as we are applying to LA but when I spoke to him he was going on about me giving them enough notice if we decided to leave etc, just seemed funny he should bring this up and not be able to hand over TA after so long.
Can anyone offer any advice as I cant apply for housing without TA - we are not planning on leaving them in the lurch and have been tenants with one of them for near 4 yrs so cant understand why they are being so difficult.

i'm guessing LA want a reference from your LL as part of the checks they run. From what you say the LL's should give a ref as you have known them so long, so I don't see why a TA should be a problem - unless you make it such (if you hadn't ask for a copy would anyone know it's lost?)
If your planning to stay at least 6 months where you are then ask LL to draw a line under lost original agreement and just get a new one signed and sorted out.
Also it's not your fault you didn't copy TA as you should have ALL been in property and signed the 2 original agreements upon taking the keys, paying deposit and 1st months rent. If it was all done by post then how was it witnessed??0
