Car Finance - Vehicle Registration

Morning

I am looking to see if anyone can give me some advice on where I stand:

Bought a new car from broker website DriveTheDeal in January 2022 with an expected build date of 6 plus months (so a good cover all for delays). Car originally due Sept 2022 then delayed until December 22 and has now finally arrived in the UK with a delivery date of 10 Feb 23. DrivetheDeal explained delay due to manufacturing issues etc but car deal was very competitive and we have managed OK with our other car. The exact same car, with same spec, is now worth £5k more than what we have agreed to pay for it (PCP deal)

Vehicle has now been registered with a 72 plate. My query is with the new 23 plates due on 1 March is there anything I can do re the dealer effectively selling me a brand new car that will be registered with a plate that is only 'new' for a few weeks? I have still to sign the final finance deal which is with VW finance and the car is coming from a VW garage in Kent.

I am not sure if there is anything I can challenge?

Advice appreciated.

Assuming it's already physically registered then there's nothing you can do - but also bear in mind that if the car is physically registered and you start messing with the dealer then they should have no issues reselling to someone else - especially if there's a £5k difference

For me you enjoy your new car, and if the plate bothers you then buy a cherished one from DVLA for £250
  • The plate doesn't bother me in terms of how it looks (if that makes sense) but i wasn;t sure if losing 5 months of it being a new plate would affect the value - i tend to trade in after 3 or 4 years.

That new car is only new for so long.
If your worried about the fact that it's a 72 & not a 23 plate. Then as above buy your own plate & swap each time you change your car.
Other than that no one cares. Value between the 2 will be next to nothing.

Certainly no consumer rights against anyone. As you got exactly what you ordered a new car.
If you wanted a 23 plate you should have asked the dealer about that before it was registered. But they may say no, as that is a busy period for them & your car will be sat in their compound for a month, with the resulting risk of damage.

But it's a PCP - so there's probably more to consider in the deal than a potential future trade-in price in 3-4yrs
  • The car will be the same age and have the same mileage and wear when you come to trade it in, irrespective of the number on the plate.  I think you're concerned unnecessarily.
  • Thanks everyone - just wasn't sure if it was something I should be concerned about as it didnt enter my head until someone else mentioned it. Appreciate the replies.
