Finding out if my name's on the deeds of my flat? Asset release?


I have a flat which my mum transferred the money (inheritance)  to pay it.  She's a total control freak and it's crossed my mind that my name isn't on the deeds.  How can I check my deeds to check it's just my name on there? 

Also, if I needed to get say £10,000 quickly for family court fees or whatever, how easy is it to get this money- flat's estimated value- £140,000

  • Do you not recall signing all the documentation provided by your solicitor when purchasing it? Did your solicitor notify you when you were ready to exchange and again at completion to let you know you could collect the keys, or was this all done via your Mother? As in she organised it and handed over the keys to you for “your home”? 

    Get a copy of the title/deeds from gov.uk site names will be on that.

    As for borrowing money secured on the flat then I am not sure that this is the best way, though am sure others will be able to advise you of the best way

    You can see a mortgage broker, with a view to borrowing money against the flat. 

    £10k won’t go far in divorce fees. You might as well borrow £50k at the outset. Or come to an amicable agreement and save nearly all that.

    That's called a mortgage. Not sure many (any?) banks will offer mortgages for a sum that small, but ask your bank or an independant mortgage broker.
  • Always better to avoid secured debt if at all possible. Personally I'd suggest for a sum of 10k you would do better to look at ordinary bank loans (unsecured) and then work hard to overpay and get the balance paid down ahead of the expected term, so saving interest.
