PAYE -when do I get refund?

I got a large bonus in December and paid 42% tax on it 😱
I do not normally pay tax due to being under the threshold. I have added up all my pay for this tax year so far and what's coming and I will be under the threshold still, yet this month I didn't get any tax rebate through my pay.

They owe me about £600. When will I get this in my pay? I looked online about a refund and all it says is that it will be refunded in pay. Should I contact my employer about this?

    What’s your tax code?
is there an ‘X’ or M1 after it?
What will your income be for the tax year with, and without, the bonus?
Do you mean the PAYE threshold or higher rate tax threshold?

If your taxable income remains below 50270 in the tax year any refund will be processed through payroll over the remaining three months unless the tax code ended with the ‘X’ or M1 that I mentioned.

    I believe it's C1162N.

My salary up to the end of this year will be about £11,300. So literally minimal tax due even with the bonus.
I got another bonus earlier in the year and that tax was coming back to me slowly at £20 a month, but that's completely stopped now even though I didn't get that all back either.

So is it worth mentioning it to payroll to ensure they get it back to me before April?

    How much was the bonus?

I got a £1k bonus in July and then another £1600 bonus in December.

So - your income is around £9000 plus the bonuses. I can’t see how you would be paying 40% on the bonus - do you mean 32% as opposed to 42%? (Tax 20% plus NIC 12%).

On that code (you have transferred some of your personal allowance to your spouse) any tax overpaid will be refunded automatically through payroll in the remaining months. If your total income, including the bonus, is below 11629, all of the tax will be refunded by March salary. No NIC will be repaid.

Thanks. That's correct, some allowance given to spouse. They get me for student loan as well on every bonus (As it clearly confuses PAYE into thinking I'm earning loads when I'm not) 🙄 which I then need to claim back separately, so I should have said 41% they get me for.

I'll keep an eye on my payslips and hopefully it comes back to me. Good to know on the NIC. Suppose I can't complain about not getting that back.

Regarding the student loan on the figures given you would appear to be entitled to a refund, details here....

"this month I didn't get any tax rebate through my pay."
It may be that rather than a refund of tax the over-deduction is only enough to result in a lowering of the tax for that and possibly some following months, if you want that checked can you advise from the payslip month number or date paid, taxable gross, tax paid, taxable gross to date and tax paid to date.
  • Why don't you get NI back if you overpaid this?

You haven’t overpaid NI though! Unlike tax, NI is calculated per payment period, not per tax year,
