Wrong opening reading on new smart meter
Hi. Wonder if someone could advise me.
My dad got a new smart meter installed by Eon in November. When his first bill came it showed an opening reading of 99882 and the bill was for £90 when usually it's about £45, even allowing for the Christmas lights in December it seemed high.
I asked Eon why the meter didn't start at 0 and they replied that sometimes this happens and the bill was correct.
Tonight I was visiting him and I checked the meter, the engineer left a card attached to the wall showing the old meter final reading and that the new meter was set to 00000.
I have sent Eon another email with a photo of the card. Does anyone know why the bill does not match the meter when the meter is programmed to send 30 minute readings?
I have lost faith in these smart meters so far.
Many thanks for any advice.

If he has been overcharged by 118 units then that would add about £42 to his bill so your calculations would seem to be correct. A few Xmas tree lights are not going to add much to the bill.Wait and see how Eon respond, but the evidence of the card should be conclusive.

email Eon's complaints - forget Customer Service
Nothing wrong with the meter - just Eon's systems

Smart meters, do they read differently according to which supplier it is?
Thanks0 -
Any idea if they got the right closing reading for the old meter? Could they have added 118 units to cover the period between getting a reading from the old one and the new one being installed?4.7kWp (12 * Hyundai S395VG) facing more or less S + 3.6kW Growatt inverter + 6.5kWh Growatt battery. It is unusual for suppliers to use anything other than 00000 as a smart meter start reading. That said, it is not inconceivable that the new meter was reading 09982 when fitted and the installer assumed 00000 rather than checking the actual meter index.
The supplier will have access to the actual smart meter readings from the day that the meter was installed. The OP can check actual 30minute usage by signing up for Bright App or N3rgy.com. If the total usage in kWh for the period equals that claimed, then there is no reason to complain.3 -
For a 30 minute smart meter profile, all suppliers will obtain the same smart meter data comprising of up to 4 index readings per meter and an XML file containing 30 minute usage data. How suppliers bill on this data may well be different. For example, most suppliers bill on index readings; however, for its time-of use tariffs, Octopus uses 30 minute usage data which produces a bill comprising 28 to 31 daily pages.Spoonie_Turtle said:

True, but I inferred Mr Diy was envisaging the actual readings changing (to charge people more) depending on which supplier was pulling the data which of course is not the case.Dolor said:

Hi. Many thnaks for advice given. They didn't reply to my email so called instead. The bill was cancelled and rebilled to 00000 without any proper explanation. Got £50 credited to account eventually. I would not recommend them to anyone. When the account started the opening reading was wrong by nealrty £100 and now this meter swap reading being wrong.2

Glad that you got things sorted - as said previously, the meter isn’t the issue here, the fact that Eon used an incorrect opening reading has caused the issue.Well done for picking up on it and successfully challenging things! Hopefully from here on the new meter will make things easier for your Dad, rather than more stressful!🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡
