I'm not booking anything and laying out money until i've got ESTA but the application for ESTA asks for a 'point of contact' in US - name. address - as required information. Can't find any advice on this but surely there must be many who've been in my position?

Just put any hotel in the city you intend to visit ,they do not check.0

Agree, just use hotel details for point of contact. Even though I have family in US, I still used hotel details.0

You can use UNKNOWN on the application for an ESTA if you don't know yet. Just update it before you travel.0
