Are you a Shell Energy customer with a smart meter? We’re taking part in a national service that could transform how the UK manages its energy use, and are inviting you to get involved.

If you’re eligible, it's easy to sign up to our Smart Flex trial, and free to take part. Each month there’ll be £100 shopping and experience vouchers to win - plus a grand prize of a MINI Electric car and charging post installation at the end of the trial.

If your smart meter sends us meter readings automatically (and has done for the past 30 days) - you’re eligible to take part. We can only invite customers who have chosen to receive information about Shell products, services and offers. You can update your marketing preferences in My Account at any time.

Smart Flex - part of the Demand Flexibility Service

Energy isn’t an unlimited resource, and there are times when the nation’s supply comes under increasing pressure. So, the National Grid has set up the Demand Flexibility Service, to improve the energy flow. It aims to balance out the major peaks in energy use by encouraging UK households to flex to off-peak for their high-energy appliances.

Rewarding you for flexing energy use

If you have a smart meter, you can play your part in the Smart Flex trial by being flexible about when you choose to use your most energy-hungry appliances - like the dishwasher, oven or washing machine. By flexing to off-peak times, you help ease the strain on the UK’s electricity supplies at times when demand is at its highest.

The trial will run until March 2023, with a series of energy-saving ‘events’ taking place during set time slots. For every 0.1kWh of electricity you save (compared to your normal energy use) you’ll earn an entry into two prize draws - a monthly one and a grand prize draw at the end of the trial. So the more electricity you flex to off-peak times, the more chances you have to win.

We’ll be giving away 100 x £100 shopping and experience vouchers in each of our monthly prize draws. Then after in April, after the end of the trial, there’ll be a grand prize draw where you can win a MINI Electric car with charging post installation. Learn more about the prize draws.

Want to get involved with Smart Flex?

We’ll be sending out invitations by email, with instructions on how to join. Once you’re signed up, we’ll get in touch with you 24 hours before each event begins so you can plan how to flex your energy use beforehand.

You’ll make the biggest electricity savings during the event by delaying when you use your most energy-hungry appliances. To find out what those are, get your smart meter’s IHD (in-home display) out. By selecting the view that shows real-time electricity consumption and switching appliances on and off individually, you can see which are using the most power.

We’re hoping lots of customers like you sign up to the trial, so we can all work together to become a more energy-efficient UK - taking us further on our path to net-zero.

I just got the invite today and one thing I noticed is that Shellsays you can’t do this if you are already on the Natl Grid flexible service plan.
also no mention of any savings or being paid to make economies in usage during the trial
