Unknown payment into current account

Hi,

I've received a payment into my current account with the transaction title: RRR LTD CLIENT ACC.

I don't recognise the company and it's not a payment I was expecting. My bank didn't offer much help with identifying the company and seemed only willing to remove the payment from my account but to find out who it is.

Obviously, if this payment was intended for me I don't want it to be removed.

When I've searched for the company, there are suggested searches that indicate other people have also unexpectedly received payment from RRR LTD but there's no additional info.

Just interested if anyone has had the same experience and figured out who they were.

Thank you!

As noted by flo22, there does appear to be a company by that name, it seems they are solicitors (the fact that your bank statement shows "client account" would tend to add weight to that supposition).
Obviously there's no way of guaranteeing that this is the correct company, but might it be worth a quick call to them to see if they can shed any light on it?  Is there any reason that you may be expecting a payment from a solicitor (or more likely, from one of their clients)?
It can often be difficult to track these things down for certain, but I'd have thought a quick phone call to them might be a good starting point?
  • Thank you both, that's really helpful.

Will get in touch with them as you've suggested.

I'd just wait a few days to see whether a letter turns up to explain it.

I would watch out in case it's a scam.

What might happen is you repay the money, then it turns out the money came from a stolen bank account and the transaction gets reversed. You end up out of pocket.

I'd just setup a savings account/pot to put it safely (so you don't accidentally spend it) and see what happens next.

  • Hi granular 360, did anything happen re your receipt from RRR ltd? I have received an amount of £350 from them too.

We had someones UC payment in to one of my Chase savings accounts last November, rang UC helpline who were as much use as a chocolate fire guard so just sat on it. It was taken back just under a month later as "in dispute" I then got a call from Chase to ask about it and I explained it was not ours and should be returned and that was the end of it.
There was no way I was going to transfer it to our "use" account and pay it back as I had no confidence in HMG to tie things up correctly following the call where they would not even talk about it without a claim ref which I obviously did not have.
I would do as above, just sit on the money and wait as it will probably be claimed back if in error.
