Why does salt make me rant?

We all know that grocery shopping has become a serious business with prices rocketing in our supermarkets and shops so I won’t elaborate on that too much. But it really has angered me this week to find that I can no longer reach down to the bottom shelf to pick up a plastic 750 gram container of table salt without batting an eyelid at the price.
Previously at around 40 pence, I couldn’t find any own brands in either Tesco or Asda today the shelves were quite bare. They did however have in stock a brand I have never seen or heard of before, same size, same container, priced at £1.45!
Luckily I did manage to find one of the few remaining bags of cooking salt for £1.75. As it was 1.5k it was no brainier really, but still!

PS
Bye the way I was in Lidl today and a 500grm box of table salt is priced at 29 pence. Did I buy it? No, I’ve got enough salt to last me for the next couple of years.

All of the price increases are shocking at the minute sadly.

Asda cooking salt is 76.7p per kg if you can get the 3kg bag https://groceries.asda.com/product/salt-pepper/asda-cooking-salt/24414 so slightly less than your 1.5 bag but nowhere near lidl price, although I suspect that will be going up soon.

Personally I think that’s a bargain, I will only ever use sea salt and my favourite is Cornish sea salt which is £8 a kg.

I would just say that simply having a sign by the product saying 29p does not mean that that is what the till is programmed to charge.  I often find items in my local Lidl which have out-of-date pricing by the product.
  • I too had heart failure at the cost of salt today

I usually get the big plastic bottle of Tescos, Im sure it was less the £1 las year ( not a regular buy ) - £1.30

I also had black peppercorns and brown sauce on the list ( of things running out, not needed today ) and didnt lift them Nearly £4 for the peppercorn and a fiver for the HP sauce

Thankfully none of these are on my I need now list so I can shop around a bit

Last week it was Colemans mustard and marmite, both found cheaper in £1 land
  • I've found salt to be a bit hit and miss for availability for at least the last 6 months, tracked one down somewhere but was definitely more expected than usual.

Heard tinned potatoes are also scarce

  • I don't know about ranting, but salt certainly raises the BP.

Wouldn't surprise me with those plastic containers that the container costs more to produce than the salt.

Fortunately a 750g pack of table salt easily lasts us a couple of years, so I'm not too worried!

I don't fancy salt with ferrocyanide to stop it clumping. This can be used in seasalt too. I'm not keen on seasalt either, remembering the toxic sewage being pumped untreated into the sea. However, Himalayan pink salt can be found in discount stores, either n a tub or grinder. The Spice Emporium coarse pink Himalayan salt is £1 for 750g at B&M., for example.

Tried going without salt? From a health point of view, wouldn’t do any harm
