Is it worth trying for a mortgage?

Hi, could anyone offer any advice as to whether we would be accepted for a mortgage at all?
My husband is on ESA and has been for the last 3 years, he is hoping to go back to work within the next year. I work part time. My husbands credit rating is good and he has no defaults/missed payments etc. He doesn't have an credit cards or any type of credit except for a mobile phone.
I have a DMP in place and have defaults on my account from 2017/2018 - and my rating is deemed as fair.
We don't have any CCJ's or anything like that. We do have 50k in savings from inheritance.
Can you even qualify for a mortgage if on ESA? Would we need to look at the specialist brokers for 'bad credit'?
Thanks
