Is this a late change in schedule by the ferry company? It's a bit more forgiveable if it had been a reasonable schedule at the time the trip was originally put together.

What do the terms say about changes in timing etc?

No, the company I booked with didn't realise there wasn't a ferry scheduled for the day they had advertised the trip. T&Cs only relate to cancellation.

It feels like you should get a full refund, but just to be clear this is you that cancelled the trip so you just need to check what your rights are carefully. From their side all they did was reschedule, then you cancelled because the new schedule didn't work for you.

So what you probably need to check is what the T&Cs say about rescheduling - a 24 hour change is generally quite a significant one and I would expect that it should entitle you to a refund without any charges.

    ... This was the email-

    Date Change:

DFDS  - the ferry company we use to cross the Channel - are not running the proposed crossing from Newhaven to Dieppe on the evening of Saturday 29th April. We have pleaded with the powers that be at DFDS to put on the 23:00 crossing but sadly no dice! We've looked into many different options including changing the route, taking coaches and the Eurotunnel instead of the ferry, or not doing the event at all this year.

To make this work, the event will now start 24 hours later. Everything else will stay exactly the same.

The new dates and times are as follows:

    -  Sunday 30th April for a 15.00 departure

    - Cycle from London to Newhaven 60 miles

    - Overnight ferry 23.00 on Sunday 30th April

    - Cycle to Paris from Dieppe on Monday 1st May – target arrival time 16.00

    - Celebrations at the Eiffel Tower

    - Head to the hotel for our celebratory dinner, drinks, and a well-earned sleep!

Tuesday 2nd May: travel back to London and pick up bikes before onward journey

It doesn't say in that email that they'll charge you £50.  Have you missed that bit out or are you simply assuming that they will charge you £50.?  Have they told you they will charge you?

You don't say who the company is.

    Is it Discover Adventure Ltd?

If so their T&Cs say that you will get a full refund.

If it's a different company then T&Cs will be different of course. If the admin charge was only made known to you after you booked then this would be considered an unfair contract term for a consumer contract
