You can use P.O. branches for CO-OP/Smile, which is good for those of us that live in the countryside....well it is until they close the POs I guess!0

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Just some replies:
Natwest released my account details to some non authorised people (my father) as he "has contacts" at his local branch via his somewhat friendly business manager. The whole issue was covered up as someone high level removed all references to it on their customer support systems. If they take security that seriously, then I don't want anything to do with them. Not only that, they left me in London with no cash after their cash machine clearing network went down a few months ago. I had to walk 8 miles home starting at 10:45PM on a Saturday night in -2 degrees centrigrade. Now I know why I did that survival course!
I have some long running issues with HSBC including losing £1800 somehow from my account (paid by BACS to creditors and landlord yet never arrived). It took 9 months to get it back costing me a total of £480 in charges, phone calls, train trips (into canary wharf to see their senior management) which was never refunded. I however have no complaints about their business banking
First Direct is HSBC.
I'm going to try Smile first (as I'm a lazy internet based person), then A&L.£8k to pay off before Jan 2011! Was 28k to pay off by Jan 2010 though so I'm happy0 -
Suggest you try Co-op rather than smile as the former has a 'basic' bank acount (Cashminder) that has internet access, whereas the latter doesn't. In the circumstances you describe, I suggest you have more chance of being accepted by the Co-op Bank.Ethical moneysaver0
