EE 4G mobile router

I've been using this for 18 months, very happily. My contract was due for renewal this month, which I did, following which I received a replacement router. Seems that EE are moving away from the Huawei made units to a different maker. All fine by me!
Now I have an unwanted white rectangular router to dispose of, again, fine by me. However, before I do the WEEE thing can it be repurposed using a different SIM or will it have been configured for only EEs? It's really an idle thought more than anything as I have no need of another router, but I could pass it on if it worked.

I guess the best idea is to ask EE and if it's locked then ask them to unlock it. Alternatively try another networks sim card in it to see if it works.
TBH "white rectangular router" doesn't really convey a lot of info, I guess its Huawei but model number would help, can you get into the set-up menu?
As you say, it would be a shame to shove it into recycling if its still functional as these are good for taking away on holiday or, like me, taking away in our caravan and setting up our own wifi network.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

Not sure that routers are covered by the same unlocking protocols as phones/tablets. I think they are secondary devices and the network may need to contact the manufacturer to unlock, which can be tricky with Huawei. Worth trying another sim in it though.1

Thanks for the advice. Think I'll pass it onto a techie who may try various options. In edit - it's going to my ex, he's in what he calls 'maker' group so it'll have some use.0
