This is going to sound daft, but he has tried so hard to help me with my depression, and none of us even knew his Dad was ill.

He has just carried on as though nothing was wrong. I guess I just feel a little guilty as I just gave him one more thing to worry about.

  • Lucy...my boss was like that...he couldnt do enough to help employees and we never really got to know them as people, however, i have left that job now and am fortunate to call my boss and his family friends (not close or anything but i see them socially if you know what i mean) and I have realised that they do have their own lives and their own problems but they also have their own support network. Normally people in this position of being responsible for others dont mind helping employees at all and are sometimes glad of being able to be of help in situations where they can....the fact his dad is so ill means he probably feels really helpless in that situation but giving help to others will mean a lot to him.

I agree with Keren, the best thing you can do for your boss is to cover at work as much as possible. Also letting him know that you are thinking of them, if you get a chance to, would mean a lot to him and the family. My dad died about 6 weeks ago and although i didnt really appreciate all the cards and messages of help at the time, on reflection....it meant the world.

Fortunately there is only me so I know roughly what is going on. Our Head of Department is very good though and is letting the rest of the Business know not to contact him.

But I will do what I can, which is all anyone can do really.
