Just received this email regarding potential power cuts. Nothing really new, but interesting that they feel the need to send it. Screenshots as the formatting is messed up.

That hasn't transposed well (on mobile) needs reformatting.

    Edited Thanks for sorting
  • I wonder whether they will just send these every three months going forwards so that people cannot complain that they were not told.

If you live where I do, then powercuts are a pretty common occurrence, some have lasted 8-10 hours so we do keep a torch handy. Being all electric everything stops.

We have also decanted ourselves into our caravan on the drive if its dragged on for more than 3-4 hours and got everso cold indoors. The van has heating, cooking and lighting all from a full Calor cylinder and fully charged battery which can keep us going for a couple of days. (I've also got a full spare Calor cylinder)

It's quite fun really, but I can understand that others may not feel the same way if they dont have some sort of contingency
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • Is this as a result of media scaremongering I wonder? We’ve certainly seen the effects recently of the Daily Fail Massive believing everything they are told by the media regardless of its accuracy!

Ian Cameron is seriously ill informed.
    1) Most copper landlines WILL still work during power cuts because the telephone exchange battery will support them, and there's also likely to be a diesel generator at main exchanges.  You just need to make sure you have a corded phone plugged in (cordless phones are likely to rely on mains power).  Unfortunately this won't remain the case if BT/Openreach proceed with Digital Voice.  Storms Eunice and Arwen knocked out power to thousands of homes for up to two weeks; this is something that dozy Ofcom have overlooked and where they need to take urgent action.
    2) You probably WON'T be able to use a mobile phone or mobile broadband during a power cut because your local base station may well have been knocked out by the same power cut.  Again, this is an area where dozy Ofcom has failed miserably.
If people believe Ian Cameron's dangerous advice, in an emergency during a power cut they are likely to find that their 'plan B' fallback of a mobile phone for 999 use doesn't work, and they won't have made sure that they have a corded phone available for emergency use.
