I moved to Brighton from S London and commute to S London.

As a place to live it's great - lively social scene, lots of stuff going on all year, lovely countryside nearby and of course the beach! It's quite a bit more relaxed here than London and much more friendly - he'll have to get used to strangers just making conversation!

No, it's not cheap, comparable to London (I'd say property prices are generally similar to the outer London boroughs rather than central London). I guess it depends on where he was looking in London?

The trains to London have been pretty good since I've been here, as long as the cost of the commute is OK (there are now season tickets that cover 2 journeys a week).

I have a car but if he's getting the train to work he really wouldn't need one living here - I tend to walk everywhere or get a bus if it's raining and the buses are really good.

    Hi
I've known a few people that worked at my place up until the point I left. Thier home, family was already in Brighton and the did 2/3 days in the office in London. Not sure if their home was close to Brighton station but they had to make another commute from central London to area of worked and rented a room in london

My friend and her husband did it in their 20s and are still there in their 50s and w loving it. Had kids and stopped working in London.

I definitely wouldn't want the journey, but do live a fairly long way out in Leigh-on-Sea. May be worth considering, unless he wants Brighton cos of friends, lifestyle, nightlife, etc. I do get it, but it is extremely pricey, not to mention the train fare! He won't get much more for his money than staying in a commutable area just outside London, or in Greater London.

They would require a reliable train service.  With this government that ain't looking likely any time soon....

But, Brighton a great place.  Have relatives there...

We allowed for an hour commute living and working near central London . If working near main line station then commute time would be fine. Property not cheap but obviously more compact city and easier to make friends. A lot depends on reliability of trains and hours of work.  If he's been living in London for some time then he will be aware of different areas where property is more affordable but these might not be for him.
