UW cashback card fraudulent transactions

Received an email from Utility Warehouse today (subject "We’re sending you a new Cashback Card") saying:
...
We’re replacing your card because we’ve seen some suspicious transactions at a range of merchants using our customer’s cards, and our analysis shows that your card was used or tested at one of these retailers.
...
So I checked the online statement and sure enough there were three identical payments (plus a final fourth one that was rejected) I didn't recognise on Jan 1st: Icm Pay - £88.78
The wording in the above excerpt makes it sound like maybe I'm not an isolated case. Anyone else had this recently?

Currently waiting for UW's fraud department to call me back.

David

  • Yes, others will have had it.

    It's standard procedure to recard.

Enter details to find out what it is for. But they are a debt collection company.

  • I've had the phone call scam, which I didn't know was a scammer at the time

The number rang me on the actual number for utility warehouse, stating that there was suspicious transactions on my card (which when I check there were). So we went through the whole process to stop them (or so I thought)

The next day £9000 was put on my cashback card, nearly £7000 was spent in a very expensive shop, then £2000 was declined for spending (due to an option I have on my account). This is when I noticed the issue and phoned them up, blocked my card and changed my password - 2 more transactions were tried after I blocked my card - there were also two cards I didn't recognise on there for the top up option

this is now with the fraud team, but I will not answer the phone even if it says utility warehouse, but instead will ring them back

Now the money I do have on the card (that is my own) cannot be touched while the investigation is going. Which could take 4-6 weeks.

I don't know if they had a security breach because there is no way anyone I personally know would get the details for my app or access to my account before the phone call happened

They got the details as you must have given them on the 1st phone call.

It is easy to find out who a card is provided by, if they have the 16 digits. As certain numbers give this info.
So they have gained your card details from somewhere the card has been used.
Often this will be via a hack of a retailer, which gives them more than just card details. They then try to use card, if declined they will contact you & gain further details from you.
