Credit card - unable to stop debits

in Credit cards
A couple of years ago I was working in the USA and took out a juno online (https://www.juno.com) subscription via my natwest mastercard so I could use the internet from my hotel room.
Called the card services (on another matter) and asked to cancel the payment agreement and they said I couldn't - I expected that.
Earlier this year I finally got round to cancelling it and the payments stopped for a few months. Yesterday another payment got taken. I called them in the states and the customer services guy said that my account was cancelled but I had now signed up for an email service (why would I do that?). He had to transfer me to a supervisor to see about cancelling it and getting a refund. The supervisor said the system was being upgraded and she couldn't see my account. No she couldn't make a note of the complaint and also couldn't take my number and call me back when the system was up - I would have to call again later.
I'll call the card services tomorrow and dispute the payment but they'll just say that I have given my details.
Could well end up cancelling the card and letting them try to chase the "debt".
It's only about £6 a month but....

Report the card lost. They give you a new card and new account number. You have to do without a card for 7 days but if it saves you money I'm sure you can live with it.
Make sure its 'lost' and not 'stolen'. Report it stolen and the bank will involve their fraud office who try to bring the police in. If there are genuine regular payments coming from the card you need to give them your new number and double check any direct debit payments to the card are switched over.

Called them again - their system is still down and still for a couple of hours.
It's not a monthly charge it's an annual charge (and I get the feeling I'm not the only person this has happenned to).
The bad thing is that I have to wait a whole year if I do manage to get through to them and cancel it.
He also said they would refund the payment and the cost of my phone calls - shame I'm calling through the free mobile number otherwise I might test that.0 -
Read the thread, already new most of it.
Bit surprised how many people didn't know about this and thought that closing a card would stop payments (it does in some cases though).0
